Dr. Richard Seager is a climate scientist at the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory. Originally from the United Kingdom, he completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Liverpool, where he developed an interest in atmospheric sciences, climate studies, and oceanography. He earned his Ph.D. at Columbia University under the mentorship of Mark Cane and Steve Zebiak, specializing in tropical atmosphere-ocean interactions and climate dynamics. Following a postdoctoral appointment at the University of Washington, he returned to Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory, where he has remained throughout his career.
Dr. Seager's research focuses on climate variability and climate change across timescales ranging from weeks to millennia, with particular expertise in atmosphere-ocean interactions, the causes of drought, and hydroclimate variability and change. His work integrates numerical climate models, observational datasets, and paleoclimate proxy reconstructions to better understand climate processes and their impacts across the globe.
