His research broadly encompasses fire-dependent and associated ecosystems in the southeastern U.S., including effects of fire regimes on plant communities, plant community classification, demographics of resprouting plants, soil disturbance effects on plant communities, remote sensing of plant communities and burned area, soil responses to land management, and fuels and fire behavior. He mentors graduate students through university adjunct faculty appointments and provides education and outreach on a wide range of topics relating to restoration and management of fire-dependent ecosystems. He received his BS in Botany from Louisiana State University and his PhD in Plant Biology at the University of Illinois.
