Dr. Erica Smithwick is the Principal Investigator of the Eastern Wildfire Network and a Distinguished Professor of Geography at Penn State University.
Her research examines how natural disturbances reshape landscapes and how forest management can be used to support resilient communities and ecosystems. For over three decades, she has worked extensively on wildfire risks and resilience in the Pacific Northwest, the Rocky Mountains, and the mid-Atlantic using a combination of fieldwork, satellite remote sensing, ecosystem models, and social science.
Through EFNet, Dr. Smithwick leads the coordination of workshops, graduate training, and practitioner engagement to support knowledge sharing and research innovation.
